'Ways of Seeing' John Berger

'Ways of Seeing' John Berger

Born in 1926, John Berger is an English art critic, novelist painter and poet whose text and television series Ways of Seeing introduces the study of images. The documentary discusses how the camera acts as a human eye and this reference is made multiple times.

A painting, like a human eye can only be at one place at one time; however camera allow paintings to be seen at a million different places at the same time by different people. Modern day technology allows reproductions of images and paintings and these can be online as well as on postcards and on TV. This means that more audiences can view original images and it is easier to content our experiences of art with others. On the other hand, reproductions of images distort the original image and the meaning of the image can be changed. The market value also depends on a painting/image being genuine and copies can mock the original.
