First Ideas on Brief
Now I have started to find inspirational images regarding the brief of this project, I am beginning to think of ways to respond using my own images.
Representing a Group
My idea to look at a group of people involves taking images of 'characters' from the drag culture and society in Brighton. There are many night clubs in Brighton that welcome drag queens as both guests and entertainment, such as Revenge and The Queens Arms.
I would approach this topic by photographing queens both on stage and backstage in order to show the audience two different perspectives of their lives. Images could include the queens outside after a show and could all be candid shots in order to create a more realistic idea of what they do. However, the could also be shots that are set up, such as portraits of their faces to show how they want to be portrayed on camera in order to show things from their perspectives.
A photographer who produces stunning portraits with the use of colouring which I find specifically interesting is Leland Bobbe. Bobbe is well known for his series of images titled Half Drag and these images (displayed bellow) are portraits of different drag queens with half of their hair and makeup ready, and half not. I love how this represents the queens in two different ways just by using one image as it displays the two different sides to them. This could have connotations on how they feel about their own identity and how they prefer to be portrayed as male or female.
